What is Sholder?

Sholder is a mental and emotional wellness platform designed to create space for clarity. It gives people private ways to set something down, work through what’s here, and find their own way forward.

What is a Sholder?

A Sholder is a trained spaceholder who listens closely, without judgment or labels, while you process what you’re carrying. They don’t diagnose, advise, or try to fix you. They help you hear yourself more clearly.

What’s the difference between Sholder, Essentials, Plus, and a Sholder?
  • Sholder is the platform.
  • Sholder Essentials is our self-guided digital experience.
  • Sholder Plus is our human-to-human experience.
  • A Sholder is the trained person who holds space for you.

Essentials + Plus

5 questions
What is Sholder Essentials?

Sholder Essentials is a private, self-guided experience for working through what’s on your mind. Write it. Say it. Work through it in your own time.

What is Sholder Plus?

Sholder Plus gives you space to talk things through with a trained Sholder who listens closely, asks with care, and helps you hear yourself more clearly.

What kind of commitment is required in my membership?

Your membership doesn’t require you to pay for Sholder Sessions on a recurring basis. Some people come once, work through something specific, and go on their way. Others stay for the long arc. Many of our members have been with us for years. Pick what works for you.

Do you take insurance?

Not right now. We built Sholder to make mental and emotional well-being affordable and accessible on its own. You’ll see that in our pricing.

How do I refer someone to Sholder?

Invite them to check out sholder.com. From there they can select the membership that works best for them.

Our Sholders

4 questions
How is this different from online therapy or coaching?

Therapy and coaching often work on you. Sholdering works with you. A Sholder isn’t trying to improve you or change you. They listen deeply. They ask real questions. They help you notice what your body already knows, and reflect back what they hear.

Sholders train in these skills. They aren’t licensed clinicians, and they don’t need to be. This is community-based support, not treatment.

Can Sholdering be a substitute for traditional therapy?

That’s yours to decide. What we can tell you: Sholders don’t give advice or make diagnoses, and they aren’t trained for the serious mental health work that therapy holds. What they can do is ask the kind of questions that help you find your own answers.

How are Sholders trained?

Psychologists, coaches, healers, and social researchers built our training method together, drawing on the best of many healing traditions. Our Sholders come from every walk of life, by design, so that whoever you are, someone here can meet you. And training doesn’t end at certification. Sholders stay connected through ongoing practice and community.

How are Sholders qualified?

It starts with an intensive workshop: 18 hours over two and a half days. Then each Sholder-in-training joins a pod of three to five peers for six weeks of guided practice, with observation and feedback from pod leaders. Only after logging all their practice hours do they complete qualification, demonstrating the Sholder Arc and the core skills of the Sholder Method.

Privacy + trust

What about confidentiality?

Your Sholder knows you by your first name and initial. Nothing more, unless you choose to share it. Every Sholder signs a confidentiality agreement. Our communications are encrypted, and if you’d rather not be seen at all, audio-only sessions are always an option.

How is my privacy protected?

Carefully. The full picture is in our Privacy Policy, but here’s what matters most:

  • What you tell your Sholder stays between you. No personal notes are captured or recorded in our system.
  • We don’t work with insurance companies, so nothing is shared, reported, or filed with them.
  • Everything is encrypted, in transit and at rest.
  • Our servers sit in data centers that meet strict security standards (SOC 2, ISO 27001, and others), and we test and monitor continuously for vulnerabilities.
Is any of my personal information available to a third party outside of Sholder or their affiliates?

Never.
